Trouble installing software

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition on my HP Pavilion
desktop computer. With the exception of the software
that came with the HP printer I installed, I've been
unable to install any other software because the computer
reaches a certain point in the installation process and
then "hangs." I tried to install a game today and was
unable to begin the setup process at all because the
computer didn't respond to the run command.

On the other hand, the same software loads normally on my
HP laptop so I tend to think the problem has something to
do with my desktop computer rather than the software. By
the way, I've disabled Norton Antivirus and closed other
programs, but that made no difference. I'd appreciate
any ideas to help with this problem. Thanks!

You may have some hardware issues, like bad RAM on the desktop. Have a
good local computer repair person check it out for you.
