everytime I download and install the service pack from
windows update I get an upadate inf. error and it tells me
to check to see if the cryptographic service is started.
The service automatically starts but i still get the error
and it still unable to download and install service pack
1.... does anyone know how I can fix this?

In control panel---administrative tools---services---Is cryptographic services
both started and set to automatic? If so, check the ms KB articles.

Hi

Your Cryptographic Service is most likely running fine, renaming or deleting
the Catroot2 folder is most likely what you need to do to solve the problem.

Take a look here:

The Catroot2 problem can be avoided in the future by installing Q817287.

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Then get - only - Q817287 and install it, which should now be OK. It
is the cure for the problem: you should then be able to carry on with
other updates, and the problem will not recur
