Trouble burning onto disc

The trouble shooter on my pc brought me here, so I will ask away! I seem to
have trouble burning anything onto disc, such as audio and photos. It's done
it a couple of times in the past but that's all.
What happens is that in the final stages of burning, the machine spits out
the CD and says the CD cannot be completed because it either needs cleaning
or it is already full.
I have gone through packets of new CDR/RWs and still this happens. If I can
pick up on anything from this, then the driver sounds as if it can hardly be
bothered to wind itself into gear.
Any ideas would be very welcome!
Cheers Chasboy

A couple of suggestions:

* If the discs you've tried are all from the same location, they could
be damaged. If you know somebody else with a CD writer that you know
works, try some of your disks on his computer. Otherwise, try getting
a disc from somewhere else and seeing if it works.

* If the drive is an old one, it might not like the new larger discs
(originally, CDRs were only 640Mb long, now they're 700 or even 800Mb).
Does it work if you try recording a disc that's only half full?

* Maybe your drive isn't compatible with the Windows XP CD writing
software. If it came with a disc with other software on it, try that.
Or try some shareware software like Alcohol 120%.
