Trouble Browsing multiple subnets.

K

Kevin

Hello,

I am having trouble browsing to other segments on our
network. All the segments are part of the same Domain.
We believe this started happening about 2 weeks ago when
we brought another DC onto the network and moved around
our FSMO Roles. We are still able to connect by computer
name to the other segments but we are just not able to
browse through Network Places.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The pdc fsmo should be the domain master browser. If it is multi homed, or not a
wins client you will have browse list problems. Also make sure that the wins
servers are wins clients to only themselves. See links below for more help and
explanation. Your wins database will be helpful in determining what computers
are master browsers and which one is the domain master browser. --- Steve

That sounds right....

What I mean is moving the FSMO role around can cause this problem.

What is most frequently forgotten in Windows 2000 and above is that the
Browser Service has not changed.
Directory lookups are the future. The Computer Browser service works on
Broadcast basis on each segment. 1 Seg Master Browser and ~3 Backups on
each segment, depending on hosts.

There is one Domain Master Browser which is the PDC(emulater). One of the
functions still in that role is to Maintain the Domain Browse List.

There is one requirement for this to work...
All SEGMENT master browsers: have to be able to resolve the
NETBIOS: Domainname
with the (1B) Master Browser record.

This can only be done by WINS or LMHOST File.
Only Segment Master Browsers would need the <1B> PDC entry. This could be
contolled by the systems on each subnet that have the Computer Browser
Service enabled.
