Hi! I'm not a new XP user, but this is the first time I have ever been to
these forums.
First off, I know I have some sort of a virus or something the Norton's
never picked up because I cannot access the following areas on my computer:
My Computer, My Pictures, My Documents, My Music, Search and Run... By not
being able to access them, I mean that I can't access them through normal
means, like just clicking on them. When I click on any of them, my screen
turns into just my wallpaper, like it does when you log off or restart and
then kicks right back to where it was. I have no idea what's causing this,
but to weed out the possibility of trojans or worms, I downloaded AVG and
uninstalled Nortons (I was running 2002). When I went to click on AVG to
install it, it popped up normally, to the window that gives you the options
"Setup", "Cancel", and "About". So I clicked on "setup" and it gave me the
following message: "16 bit Windows Subsystem:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application." (These was also an Ignore option). So I clicked the close
button and tried again, this time with the same results, but instead I chose
Ignore and the program still shutdown. So I did my backwards way of getting
into looking at things on my PC since I can't do it the normal way, and went
into my WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder to check out this autoexec thing, only to
discover, that there was no such thing in there. So I went on my quest to
find the file and my dad and I found it on his PC (Which runs on ME in case
you need to know that), copied it to a 3.5" floppy and transferred it into my
WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder. We thought that this would fix the problem of
getting it to install, but it didn't. same error message once again. We tried
for hours to figure out the problem, but to no avail. So as an alternative to
keep my machine protected, I got online and downloaded Zone Alarm for the
time being.
I have no idea what kind of info you need about my PC to help me out, but
I'll give some basic info. I'm on a Compaq 5400US which I bought in February
of 2002. It came with 128MB of SDRAM, which I've since upgraded to 384MB. It
has a 1.2 GHz Athlon in it and came preinstalled with XP. I have a
partitioned hard drive, but I don't know if you need to know that to fix the
problem.
I'm at my wit's end here. All I wanted to do was get some decent anti-virus
software to clean up my PC and make sure everything was ok. If I can't get
help on this, I'm going to have to buy XP and do a clean install, which I'm
not looking forward to doing at all. Please help me if you can. Thanks in
