Transparent object in PowerPoint 2000

I am trying to overlay an object on a chart that is a black circle with a
number or letter inside the circle. The number or letter must be transparent
so that wherever on the chart I move the black circle, the number or letter
will take on the background color of that part of the chart. Can this be done
with PPT 2000? Thank you.

In later versions, you can copy the circle with text to the clipboard then
PasteSpecial, as PNG and then use the picture toolbar's Transparent tool to make
the text transparent. For some bizarre reason, the tool's disabled when you do
this in PPT 2000.

So try this: once you've done the copy/paste as described above, copy the
result then start MS PhotoEditor and choose Edit, Paste as new image then use
ITS transparency tool to make the number transparent. Then save as a PNG and
bring that back into PPT via Insert, Picture From File.
