transparent icons

Greetings

I have an old shareware program called 'Icon Editor' by Herman Compute
and i am trying to use it to create an icon with a transparent
background so that i can use it on my XP desktop. Anyone know how to
create transparencies with this program, or any suggestions for an
easier, more user friendly icon program that will do the same?
