transitions using powerpoint

I just acquired powerpoint because of the feature set available when
using the add on - power show.

However, I was shocked and dismayed to find that NO true dissovle -
i.e. a smooth cross "fade" level transition between one image and the
next seems to be available from the transition selection. Rather they
have a "fade smoothly" which is actually a digital stepped transition -
ugly and digitally in gross steps, not smooth. Is there a real smooth
dissolve available, or as an add on?

I was also dismayed to not be able to control the transition rate to
thirtieths or hundreths of a second. Is there a way to do this or an
add on that lets you do this rather than the idiot, and dumbed down,
"slow" "medium" "fast"?

Even furthe I was shocked to find that the finest control over slide
duration was a truly "gross" 1 second. Is there a means, or add-on,
that allows slide duration control to a thirtieths or hundreths of a
second???

If these are not possible or available, this is the worst slide show,
presentation applicaiton I have ever come accross. What gives with
this MS application?

Are you talking about animations or transitions? you seem to be talking
about both, but working with only one. I would recommend that rather than
using the transitions to move between the pictures, you use animations. Then
you can adjust the animations speeds to your heart's content.

If you right click the animation in question and select timing, you change
the time (or the delay for that matter) to anything down to .01 second or up
to somewhere over 3 minutes. (Never gone higher or lower than that... It
just isn't something I have needed. How do you do it? Click in the timing
box and type the number you wish. It will automatically change the text to
the number you provide.

I also recommend that if you are looking at this level of animations, you
turn on the advanced timeline so that you can work with your individual
animations more easily. To do that, right click any animation and select
"Advanced Timeline". If you want to see it horizontally instead of
vertically, drag the task pane to just under your toolbars.

As Kathy says animation is the way to go.

eg On slide 1 place picture A
Make a duplicate slide so that picture A is also on slide 2 (no transition)
Place picture B over A and give A a fade exit and B a fade entrance (with
previous) you can adjust the speed as Kathy says to pretty well anything you
like

PS

If your transition fades or animation fades are steppy you might want to
check that you turned ON graphics accelleration for your graphics card (slide
show > set up show)
