Transferring XP files to new computer

Currently have P3 running XP Pro with XP Office Pro. Bought a P4 that comes
with XP Home and minimal software. Two questions: 1) can I legally load the
XP Pro and XP Office Pro on to the new computer (I own it and it's
registered)?
2) How do I move my existing Outlook/Outlook Express e-mails and files over
to the new computer?
I plan to move XP Office saved files by burning cd's and moving them.
Thanks for any advice.

No. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for
each computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.

My suggestion would be to perform a clean install of XP Pro and Office XP to the new P4 computer. Download and install all relevant patches and updates. Download and install all relevant drivers and updates. Basically, get all networking and applications working and configured as desired.

Once that is done, remove the hard drive from the P3 machine and add it to the P4 machine, then reboot. You will now be able to move your data at your convenience. You will event be able to search for config files and application profiles that you may not have known about. Everything will be there on your old drive at your immediate disposal should you ever need to go back and look for something.

Some technical Info -

1- If you're using the Primary IDE channel in the new system, my advice would be to add the old hard drive as master device on the Secondary IDE channel and configue CD-ROM drives as slaves.

2- If you're using a SATA hard drive in the new system, add the old hard drive as a master on an available IDE channel, but don't forget to go into the BIOS setup and dictate the Boot Order. Some BIOS tend to default to the IDE device even if previously configured for the SATA.

Assuming retail licenses (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP and Office from the computer they're currently on
and install them onto the new computer. If it's been more than 120 days
since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely
be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been
less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

2) How do I move my existing Outlook/Outlook Express e-mails and files over

The File and Settings Tranfer (FAST) Wizard is designed for this purpose.

Thanks to everyone. Some of this is not 'English' to me. I think I can work
my way through it. If you know a Windows of Idiots site, let me know.
