A sata drive by design has no master/slave setting.
Connect your pata drive, to an IDE connector, and reboot. Ensure the bios is
set to boot from sata/scsi.
PS you are sure your emachines mobo is dead and not the hd?

Provided your sata drive is set as the boot device conecting an IDE drive
should not cause any problems, even if an o/s is installed on it.
1) Is the IDE drive detected in the bios?
2) you might want to visit your IDE hd site, download and create the
bootable floppy checking utility, and double check the status of the hd.

Thanks again My bios settinhs sees the HD ..When I switch back & forth from slave to cs it ses it in channel 1(cs) channel 2(slave) but always as secondary hd. No luck w/emachine on downloading any help I think I will sit on this for awhile...Once again thanks Gene V

Its not Emachine you obtain the utility from, but the actual manu of the hd

from slave to cs it ses it in channel 1(cs) channel 2(slave) but always as
