transferring data, windows 98 to windows xp

Hi, I have just bought a new PC which uses windows xp
dos. This system does not recognise text files and some
photographic files which were stored on re-write disc
using my old windows 98 powered computer. As some of this
data is very important to me, can anyone advise me how to
transfer windows 98 files to windows xp?

Do you have the applications installed on your XP machine that were used to
create your old files?
they CAN'T be text files, as Notepad in XP will open Text files.

My new computer with windows XP automatically showed

pictures i had saved on a floppy disc from another
computer. I however had to change all my written files to
an RTF format. But I found out the hard way that it won't
change spreadheets to that format.

I also had files that I needed to tranfer, if you can

put them in the old computer and change them to a rich
text file ,they will open on your new computer
