Hello,

I have a file on my WIndows 2000 machine that I want to transfer to a
Windows XP machine. Both boxes are connected to the same router. How
do I transfer the file from the 2000 box to the XP?

Thanks in advance, please let me know what a better newsgrou might be
if this is not the one - Dave

The simplest method is to go to your Network Neighborhood and check that
your other computer is showing up. If it is, you can just copy the file to
the shared folder on that computer, using Windows Explorer. If you can't
see the other computer, you have to get your network working on both
machines. You can also share folders with other network users, and copy
files back and forth between the computers.

You will have to 'share' the folder on the 2000 machine so that you open it
and then transfer the file to the XP machine.

I have set up sharing and permissions approrpiately on the machine I
want to move files from. When I try to connect to that machine from
the win xp machine, I am asked for a username and password to access
the windows 2000 machine. Where do I find, or how can I reset that on
the win2000?

Thanks, -Dave

You need to create a suitable account on the source machine - Or use an
exisitng one. Basically, the account being used on the client (to access the
share) must match an account on the source computer.

This account must of course have at least read-access rights to the share,
too. If the default permissions are left at "everyone" then it will, though
(if it's more than a temporary setup) then it would be more secure to allow
only this account to have rights to the share.

How do I create an account on the source machine or check what the
existing ones are? I know there is one existing one on there, I just
don't know how to find it.

Thanks, -
