Transfering settings and programs

I recently bought a new computer when my old one stopped working. I removed
the HD and have made it an external drive, but I cannot seem to boot from
it. I tried adding the old HD to the new computer, but nothing would work.
I am certain I set the old HD to be the slave and the new HD to be the
master, but the computer just would not boot up with both attached. Anyway,
what I want to do is transfer everything over to the new computer and then
just reformat the old HD for extra storage. Any ideas?

You may solve your problem if you re-install the old hd into your new
comp. using the "cable select" method. Even more especially if one of the
hd's is a Western Digital. HTH, s

I did that first. When that did not work, I specified one master the other
slave. I really just want to get the stuff off of the old and on to the
new. What would be the best way?

Do you have a USB key or USB drive? You could use the Files and Settings
Transfer wizard. Insert the XP CD into the drive on the old computer. Run
FAST from the CD. On the Select a transfer method screen pick Other then
browse to the USB device. Let FAST copy to the USB device then insert the XP
CD in the new computer, run FAST and restore the files and settings. This
will copy most stuff. If anything is missing you can manually copy the
missing data to the USB device then to the new machine. Another method if
you have a router is to hook up both computers and use FAST over the
network.
