Transfer personal stuff from WinXP Backup to a new Win7 PC

My WinXP computer died and I now have a nice shiny black HP Pavilion
Win7 unit.

I lost everything on the jammed WinXP disk and I don't know how to
Restore on to Win7
all my family documents, music and photos backedup via WinXP onto an
external hard drive.

Is there a procedure for me to do this?

Restore implies you already have the data on an external disk. If so,
why do you think you need Windows XP to perform the restore?

Did you mean to ask how can you transfer the data from the dead
machine to an external disk so you can transfer it to Win 7?

You need to provide some real detail. Where is the data currently? Is
the data encrypted at all? Where do you want the data to end up? Did
you ever make backups? How did your old machine die? Is the hard
drive from that machine still functional?

Apologies for the misunderstanding and the way I worded this.
The data I want was backed up to an external hard drive using WinXP
Backup and Restore.
I thought that data would have to be Restored before it could be
placed in a Win7 Library Folder.

That drive is now linked to Win7 and in Explorer is shown as Ext Drive
(F:)
The data I want is in Computer Ext Drive (F:) Backup My Files and
as an example the photos
I want to restore are in My Photos.bkf
I dont have the skill to restore the .bkf or to open that .bkf and to
transfer the opened file to
Libraries Pictures My Pictures
So thats where I'm desperate for your help and advice.

WOW Thanks Philo
That seems to be what I need.
From this point it looks to be above my skill level so I shall have to
ask a friend!

When you are all done, write back and leave a message describing how
successful you were and any problems/solutions you experienced. I'm
sure in the future others will need to perform a similar migration and
it would be useful to have some first hand experience in the archives.

Job Completed, the procedure worked well, but I didn't do it so I
can't really comment.
The Windows link from Philo worked, windows replied with this hot fix,
it had a PW for that day and another for the next day.
