Transfer old programs to Vista

When the time comes for me to upgrade my system by buying a new PC, the OS
will certainly be Vista. How can I trasnfer all of my software from my old
system to my new system? I can't re-install the software, because there are
no CDs or DVDs.

You will have to either re-download the installation files to the new
system, or if you have saved them on your hard drive, you can move them to
the Vista computer and then install them. There is no "transfer"
capability—never has been.

And how does one install an already-installed program from the old hard-drive
to the new OS?

You do not, most people have the original CD/DVD or the install program
(they originally downloaded from the Internet).

OK.

Now, for software for which I have a CD, such as Microsoft Money, will
Microsoft allow a reinstall, since a program is already registered as being
installed on a different (my old) PC?

You can't.
I think Charles was thinking about programs or utilities that you have
downloaded before.
If you are talking about applications, like Office Word, Excel, Outlook,
etc., then you need the original program install disks.
If you don't have any installation CDs, you better buy the new PC with
whichever programs you want to use.
You can move the data files.

If you are transferring from one computer to another, Microsoft has a
program (and incidentally a hardware cable) that facilitates this. It is
basically the same piece of software that they use to reinstall programs
during the upgrade process. I have seen this hardware at computer stores,
but you can go to the Microsoft store and find and buy it.

Usually you will be able to re-install on another PC but you'll need to
check the licence agreement, as some OEM versions of software are tied
to a specific PC.

You can not. It has to be reinstalled.

I can't re-install the
software, because there are no CDs or DVDs.

Then sorry to say, you are out of luck, unless the software was downloaded,
and can be r
redownloaded.

I wound up installing Money 98 from an old MS Essentials disk I had around!
My old computer had Money 2002 preinstalled on it, but the installation
disks won't work on any other PC. I downloaded a trial version of Money,
which won't open my old backup or allow me to do anything without linking to
my account online (I don't know if the full version will allow you to avoid
that). Just want to start with my running balance - 98 is archaic, but it
actually works with Vista!

If you plan ahead to another new computer in a few years, buy the retail
versions of all programs. Anything preinstalled on a new computer is forever
tied to that computer; operating system (difficult to buy a computer without
one, term is "bare"), application programs such as Microsoft Office, MS
Publisher. Generally, retail versions must be uninstalled on the old system
and reinstalled on the new one. Depending on the EULA, some may be installed
on two systems.

John,

You also fogot to mention that programs cannot be transferred with that
cable. Data and software installation execs—yes. Installed programs—no.

Forgot to mention make sure you run the vista upgrade program and
uninstall any anti virus program you have and any programs identified as
not compatible

You are wrong. Read. This is to install the PROGRAMS. Just the same as
Vista now does when it lays down the Vista image and installs the XP
programs.

J

John Barnes

If you do the research, you will find out that Vista ALWAYS lays down a
clean image and then reinstalls the programs, unlike prior systems where
they copied files from the install .cab replacing old system files with new
system files. WET transfers files and settings Easy Transfer COMPANION
transfers programs.

Yes, there was. You could move folders with programs in them and Windows
would prompt for proper transfer to ensure the programs would work.

That's how flip you MS people are, really, Ken

"You're out of luck."

You mean, I'm out of hundreds of dollars. Your obvious intentional plant
obsolescence is disgusting, and you, on your roller coaster of money, just
don't give a damn about people who can hardly come up with all this extra
cash because you decide to blow up your last OS.
Disgraceful.
You owe me my investment in your earlier and still functional technology,
Mr. Blake, and then you owe me an apology.

Ken is not employed by Microsoft.

SORRY KEN!
....but you know what I mean.

My Star Office 7 opened without a problem.
So what is MicroSoft's excuse? Tell me this is NOT done intentionally.
