transfer files via serial cable

i am trying to transfer files from a win98 computer to a
win xp computer. there is a file transfer wizard that
allows a transfer of files via cable. i try this and
have both computers attached via serial port cable. i
have each computer autodetect the serial ports so they
can "see" each other. they never recognize each other.
computers just continue to search for each other. how do
i get them to recognize each other?

Are you using a crossover cable? You can't use a standard serial cable.
