transfer file from laptop to desktop

Hello, I am trying to do what I thought was the simplist
thing in the world!

I need to transfer some files from my laptop to my
desktop. I first tried to set up a wireless home network.
I get to the part in the setup wizard that states "do you
want to create a network setup disk". When I say yes, the
computer smartly discovers that I do not have a floppy
drive and cannot create the disk and gives no other
option. Who has floppy drives these days anyway?! I have
a CD burner and was hoping someone knew how to bypass the
wizard and tell me how to create the network startup disk
(the other option is to use the windows xp startup disk
which I don't have because this is a dell.)

So round 2: I try to use a direct parallel cable
connection. I set up the network connection and was able
to connect to my laptop from my PC..cool! Now how do I
get to the files on my laptop? I tried file sharing
wizards and file transfer wizards which don't work over
parallel cables on xp.

Having fun in networking....hope you can help. JM
