Traffic does not route through switch

Does anyone know why when I connect my router, hub and switch the following
way it works, but when I remove the hub it doesn't work?

This works
Router to Hub to Switch

This does not work
Router to Switch

I have tried to use DHCP, from the router, and also hard code the IP values.
This works fine when the Hub is in the middle, but neither of these work
when I just have the Switch connected to the Router. The network
connectivity is working there is just a problem with the routing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Switch - Linksys 10/100 5-Port Workgroup Switch

is your router also a cable or DSL modem that pushes a DHCP address to the
device that is on the other end?

If not... not sure what to tell you.

If so, it has to do with the fact that each switch port has its own MAC
address, and it has a tendency to drive your router crazy... I did this when
I had my cable modem, and it was a nightmare. I put a hub in there, and it
was all good.

Modem - hub - router - switch - server/pc

It was all good. The hub between the modem and the switch gave me the
ability to have "public hosts" like game servers, on routable IP's that were
not behind my firewall/router. It also gave me the ability to simulate
off-network clients for troubleshooting security on the router.

Hope that helps,
