Business Contact Manager doesn't seem to differentiate between existing

I hope to do business with as business contacts, or is there another way?

You can designate a prospect as a lead and filter based on that.

What is the exact procedure that you are following now? Knowing that should
enable us to suggest a better way. :)

Are you using BCM 2003 or BCM 2007?

I don't have an exact procedure in BCM. That's what I'm trying to establish.

I am lawyer with my own practice. I designated my current clients and their
contacts as "accounts" and "business contacts." Everyone else is in my
regular Outlook contacts folder. It is unclear to me how to designate
someone as a lead.

It's a new feature in BCM 2007. I guess I am too used to it. :)

Anyway, you can set categories on a business contact and then filter by
them.
Here is how to do it:
1. Open the business contact that is a to be designated as a lead
2. Click on the Categories button and add it to the Lead category. You can
just type it in if it doesn't already exist.
3. View -> Arrange By -> Current View -> By Categories

By the way, you can assign multiple contacts to a new category from this
view by selecting the contacts, right-clicking them, and choosing to add a
category.

I forgot to mention that I am using Outlook 2003.

I knew that already.

Try the procedure of using categories anyway.

I see. I use the same basic technique in to group my tasks. I will keep my
eyes out for BCM 2007, as this is a little cumbersome for what I am doing.
Thanks for the help.
