Greeting all,
Off topic a bit - it will not happen again.

Is there any way to trace an IP address to a specific user's account?

I'm using statcounter which gives the webmeister a lot of statistics about a
particular site and it lists a lot of stuff- refrerrer pages, host by IP
number, along with city, etc.

Besides finding out the ISP through the IP number - can one find out the
user as well?

Thank you.
Eddy

Not without a court order, unless you have a form on your site where the user complete it and you
capture the IP address that they are connected to the internet at the time.

FYI: AOL users share multiple IP addresses.

Thomas,
So when I receive a specifc IP number from statcounter - lets say:

141.36.80.23

(the groupings are wrong but for the sake of an example)

I can find the _host_ (ISP) from one grouping of the IP number but you
cannot find the particular *user account* _within_ that specific ISP.

Yes?

Thank you for your help.
Eddy

Correct.

Blocks of IPs are assigned to ISPs, Web Hosts, large companies/corporations, etc. Internally these
organizations may assign specific IPs to individuals.

And, unless a user has a static IP, they are assigned a different one each tine they start the
computer and log on.

Additionally, more and more people are going through "proxy servers" which
mask their actual IP number. It is possible for the same person to have an
IP that shows they are in Japan, then in New Orleans, then in Australia, then
in... you get the picture. They can change at will with the appropriate
tools at hand...
