Toolbar Delay - Buttons Unavailable Upon Opening Email

S

I have a user that is experiencing an issue related to Outlook and I'm hoping
to find some assistance here. The user is running Outlook 2003
Professional...

If I double click an email message to open it, the message opens up in a new
window right away, however I can't perform any action on the message for 5 -
10 seconds. If I try to use any of the toolbar buttons such as Delete or
Forward they are unavailable during this time. I can basically view the
message and do nothing else with it. After about 5 -10 seconds of having the
message open, the toolbar buttons finally become available for use. I tried
creating a new Outlook profile for this particular user but that did not
solve the problem.

I'm just wondering if there are some settings I can change or anything else
I can check for to try to resolve this issue. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Try the following: close Outlook. Locate the outcmd.dat file and delete it.
Open Outlook and test. The outcmd.dat file will recreate.

Note that you have to enable the computer to view hidden files/folders and
known file extensions.

If that doesn't work, please post back.

Thank you Kathleen! I will give that a shot and let you know what the
results are either way.

Kathleen,

I tried your suggested fix and it worked perfectly. Thank you very much for
the help, the toolbar is responsive very quickly now upon opening an email.
So that file obviously controls the toolbars in some way?

Thanks again!

Hi Kathleen,

Deleting the outcmd.dat file did help with the toolbar delay issue
initially, however the problem returned. I'm hesitant to delete the
outcmd.dat file again as the last time I did so the user lost their toolbar
customizations. Can you think of anything else I could try to help with
these delays. This particular user has Outlook configured so that when an
email message is closed the next message in the inbox is automatically
opened. The user works through his inbox in this fashion, using the toolbar
on the mail message to either file the message away in a subfolder, delete
it, etc. When he does so the next message in his inbox pops up
automatically, however the toolbar buttons are inactive for 2 - 5 seconds,
then they suddenly become active again. If anyone has any suggestions it
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Shane
