Tool to lock access to directories?

Does anyone know of a safe, preferably open source tool that would
preferably hide or lock directories (folders) on my windows xp machine?
Either directories or even whole partitions, without needing to move
them. In fact, come to think of it, I have something like 6 partitions
on this machine (across 2 hard drives), and I would like to make only 2
of them accessible, one is the system partition, the other is a data
partition.

I don't want anything cryptographic or difficult, I don't want
something to protect from hackers or "FBI/government", just need
something so that my personal content on my machine doesn't get browsed
by guests here at my place, either intentionally or accidentally. For
example, stuff like that cringeworthy diary entry you made a long time
ago or those embarrassing nude self-portraits you took when you started
exercising to monitor your progress, and whatever else is there, stuff
like that.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hide Files
http://junk.atechsite.com/Office_utilities/hidefiles.zip
Hide Files is freeware security program to hide any number of files or
folders.
You have any files or programs that you don't want to share with other
or they contain financial and tax information, passwords, personal
letters and emails, private images, and other confidential or personal
data. But typically, computer files and folders have not security
protection so the best way to protect them is to make files or folders
invisible for another's eyes. Hide Files makes hidden any files and
folders (or whole program folder or even all computer disks).
Hide Files allows you to select any folders (and sub folders with
files) of your choice to protect as hidden files and folders. You can
select any folders on your computer or drag-and-drop the desired
folders from Windows Explorer into the Hide Files window. In one mouse
click the folders selected become invisible. Once files or folders are
hidden, it is impossible to find them, or access and remove any file.
Unhiding files or folders is as easy as hiding them - just one mouse
click and they are visible and accessible to you again. If program
folder or whole disks are hidden, itself program or Windows will
continue to work normally.
Hide Files is protected by a password and hotkey that you can change or
remove at any time. You can use this security features to protect Hide
Files from unauthorized start.

CompuSec PC Security Suite - Freeware
http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/security/fwaccess.html
http://www.ce-infosys.com.sg/CeiHome.asp
http://www.tusafe.com/nonags/security.html
2000/XP
CompuSec PC Security Suite is a security software that uses pre-boot
authentication and full hard disk encryption as well as encryption of
floppy disks and other removable media. The pre-boot access control
requires you to enter your UserID and password before the system will
boot up. There are two encryption methods available, one that will keep
your data encrypted prior to boot, and one that will encrypt data
on-the fly. If the data is encrypted before boot, your hard disk can
only be accessed with the proper password (even removing the hard drive
would still keep it protected). The Full Hard Disk Encryption uses AES
with fast encryption speeds to keep your data private and secure. The
program can also encrypt floppies and other removable media, so that
the files are only accessible by the authorized user. It currently only
supports a single-user pre-boot logon. CompuSec PC Security Suite is
completely free and not limited in features. The developers also create
hardware e-identity devices that are compatible with the software and
allow logon with a USB or Smartcard key instead of typing a password.
Since the software needs to modify the Master Boot Record, it is
important that you disable any anti-virus software during installation,
otherwise the install will fail.

Windows XP - Lock Workstation Icon
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art5301.asp
At my clients office running Window's 2000, the quick launch toolbar
includes a "lock workstation" icon by default. I use it all the time
when I am leaving the workstation and want to secure the computer.
Windows XP has a similar feature you can add that will lock the user
status and allow for switching to a new user without disrupting the
position of the current user. You can add a "Lock Workstation" icon to
the quick launch toolbar as follows:

· Right click on the desktop and select New | Shortcut
· Copy and paste the following path into the location field
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll LockWorkStation
· Click on Next
· Name the Short Cut "Lock Workstation" or "Switch User" as you
prefer
· Click on Finish. The "Lock Workstation" icon will be displayed on
your desktop.
· Drag the icon on your desktop down on to the Quick Launch toolbar
and position it to your convenience.
· Delete the shortcut from your desktop

Now you have a quick and easy way to lock your workstation and set it
up for a new user whenever you need to walk away from the computer for
a period of time.

Win95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP
InstallFile quickly solves the common problem of replacing or deleting
locked files. You cannot run your favorite application. One of the dlls
suddenly has the wrong version number, probably as a result of the
installation of another program. After searching the disk and CD-ROMs
you find the right version, only to discover the wrong version cannot
be replaced. At this point, typically you would reinstall your favorite
application, perhaps loosing a lot of customized options. Sounds
familiar? Use InstallFile to replace the wrong version file with the
right version file. And it works!

In fact, come to think of it, I have something like 6 partitions

of them accessible, one is the system partition, the other is a data

The old Norton Diskedit would do that - unfortunately it stopped
working with current versions of Windows, becaust direct hardware
access is no longer allowed. If someone makes a program that lets you
edit the master boot record, you can just delete the partitions you
want to hide. (Kee[ing the information somewhere on a live partition,
of course, so that you can restore it.) Come to think of it, there
was a utility that aloowed you to boot DOS or DrDOS and did exactly
that - switched the partition table info. Again, that can't be done
so easily any more.

Yet ... do not forget the awesome power of DOS. DOS cares not one whit
what you have done in Windows, and DOS will reveal all to the user
empowered with its knowledge. However, you might be able to disguise
the name of a folder with usage of symbol bytes in the folder
(directory) name. Knowing how to do that trick is a DOS thing.
