Too much formatting

Recently when I highlight a section, paragraph, word, etc., to change the
font size using Shift-Ctrl-> the entire document changes. How do I stop
this and only change the size of the selected text? I was using Word2000,
and now have Word XP. Thanks.

Need to add that it also does this with Ctrl-B also and only when
reformatting the first line. I want a large, bold title, not the whole
document!
