Too many fields errors

J

Jim Lovelace

I have a running transferspreadsheet process I added a few
fields(columns) to. Now I get the error "Too many fields
defined".

Total columns are 14 by 820 rows = 11,480. Not enough to
exceed Excel limits. The process was working, using a
query to excel file name overlaying named sheet.

Why now am I getting the error message? I have used
module DoCmd and prior the Macro transfer method.

Excel does have a 256 column limit, so if you trying to apply 11480 columns
across, this will present an issue for Excel. What you may want to try, see
about applying the columns to the rows of Excel instead, though this can get
to be a bit tricky.

One single Excel Spreadsheet can not exceed 65536 rows by 256 columns. The
number of worksheets in a workbook are limited by the amount of RAM (or so
they say), but be careful there too cause Excel does have this *FIXED* RAM
usage limit of either 80MB for Excel 97 and Excel 2000 while it's no more
than 160MB of RAM usage for Excel 2002, and that's regardless how much RAM
is on the system. If the RAM usage is exceeded, you can expect Excel to
crash as this has happened to me a number of times early on when I first
started working with Excel due to this limitation.
