too manny different cell formats message

The problem I am having is invoving a workbook that when
originally compiled had some pages with Japaneese
characters in it. When I attempt to open the file in Excel
97 I get the message "Too many different cell formats",
and the workbook will not open. Is there any way to open
this workbook?
 
Thank you for the reply. My problem, however is that I
can not even open the workbook. When I attempt to open it
I get the message, "Too many different cell formats". I am
searching for a way just to open the workbook.
