TOC help needed!

I'm working on a 350 page document that was saved by someone in four
versions; i.e., the first 90 pages in version 1, the second 90 in version 2,
and so on.

Each version has it's own table of contents.

I have to put the document--which was unstable to begin with before being
put into separate versions--into a single document with TOC.

When I got all the versions into a single document somehow the TOC fell
right into place with their numbered paragraphs in apple pie order--fields
and all.

THENNNNNNNN, after meandering through the document a few seconds, I went
back to take another look at the TOC and the page numbers were still there
but the paragraph numbering was not.

I can't seem to find out how the TOC was entered in the first place since
each of the numbered paragraphs in the document show up as Normal Style.
There are no hidden paragraphs indicated and there are no TOC fields in the
body of the document. I only know of two ways to do it, by styles with
hidden paragraphs and also with the Ctrl+Alt+O process one by one.

If anyone has ANY suggestion whatsoever as to where I should begin with this
document, I would be most appreciative. You've always come through in the
past. And thanks for that!

If numbering was applied using a "list style" or by promoting/demoting
outline levels, then a TOC based on outline levels would presumably preserve
the paragraph numbering, but this is a pretty iffy way to construct an
important document, at least in my opinion.

Thanks a million for your reply, Suzanne. I agree that such an important
document should have a stronger foundation! I'm writing this from home and
won't again have access to the document until tomorrow afternoon. I'm sure
I'll have more questions then about this troublesome job.

Maybe some of the others can be more helpful, as I'm completely clueless
about this method of applying different outline levels to the same style; I
always set up outline numbering with a specific style for each level (which
can be made virtually unbreakable), and although I will accept in principle
that the other method works, I've never tried it.

There seem to be two separate questions here - firstly how the TOC was
created and secondly why it has lost paragraph numbers.

For the first, you need to look at the TOC field code - the Help gives
information about the various switches and there is more in Suzanne's
article at http://www.word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/TOCSwitches.htm, but if
there are no styles and no TC fields then the betting is on a TOC made using
paragraph outline levels (not the same as numbering levels) - \o switch in
the TOC field.

I'm not clear whether the numbering has disappeared only from the TOC, or
also from the paragraphs in the body of the document. Would need to know
more about how the paragraphs are numbered in any case.
