TOC Entries picking up too much text

I created a TOC (Table of Contents) for my 50-page outlined document the
usual way (I thought).

Now SOME entries (a string of them in one part of the TOC) have extra stuff
in them: a bullet and a tab that sets off text making it look out of place.

Is there a way to drill into the specific entries and fix them (remove the
leading bullet and tab)? I presume it has something to do with the Style or
paragraph format, but everything I've tried so far doesn't last (when I
update the TOC). I can simply delete them before final printing but I would
like to know how to fix/eliminate this annoyance. Thanks.

Does this happen for all entries at a particular level in the TOC? If so,
check the settings of the corresponding TOC style (TOC 1 for level 1 and so
on).
