TMPGEnc freeware?

Witchsmeller

Hi,

I've just downloaded TMPGEnc to experiment converting MPEGs to DVD files
but I'm getting the "MPEG-2 trial period has expired" message (I think I
downladed it a while ago & never fully used it!).

Is TMPGEnc itself just an MPEG editing tool, with the MPEG-2 conversion
part being shareware? Is there any freeware on the market to convert MPEGs
to a DVD compatible format?

Thanks, Jason.

As I recall, TMPGEnc does not require an actual install; you just put it
into a folder and launch it. So you could just delete your present copy of
TMPGEnc and download a new copy...

Lots of software recommendations (much of it freeware) and tutorials, etc.:

Ian,

Yeah there is no install but it is a fresh download? However it works the
MPEG-2 part is only 30 days trial & it obviosly can tell it's been on
this PC before, hidden files or something maybe??

Cheers, Jase.

I may be wrong but I think TMPGEnc uses whatever MPEG-2 software it
finds already on your computer. I don't think it can include the MPEG-2
software legaly. You may have downloaded MPEG-2 software somewhere else
seperately, and that is what is expired....of course I could be wrong.

The MPEG-2 part of TMPGEnc was free at one time until the author was
notified he has to pay royalties. AFAIK, the unlock code is somewhere in
the registry so you're SOL. **Begin OT** - TMPGEnc's MPEG-2 encoder is one
of the best in the industry and well worth the $$. - End OT**

Cheers Dud,

I'm assuming SOL = shit outta luck ; ) I don't have enough call for using
TMPGEnc to be honest, I just have a few MPEGs & thought I'd tinker a
little. I'm doing a clean install of Windows soon, so I may give the
trial version another go then & if in the future I need it I'll be happy
to pay for a license.

TMPGEnc ver.12a is an old freeware version which has unlimited
support for mpeg-2. You can still download it if you can find it. I
just downloaded it recently. Sorry but I can't say where I forgot to
bookmark it. If you can't find it I will email it to you if you'd
like.

I checked myself & found 12a on this site:

Version 12a is in Japanese but a patch is also available to convert to
English, worked fine for me.

Thanks again, Jase.

More likely it's simply a cryptic entry in the registry.
