*.tmp files in C:\Documents and Settings\...

WinXP Pro SP2 all MS updates
Laptop
80GB primary/65GB used; 160GB secondary USB/135GB used (both ATA, not SATA)
C:\Documents and Settings\UserID.DomainName\Local Settings\Temp

I've recently noticed about 100MB of *.tmp files and others in the above set
of directories. Many of these files are dated before 2008 or essentially
before the last cold boot into the WinXP OS. Is it ok to delete these files
en-mass? Like ALL of them? What's the pro/con on it besides making me feel
like I've recovered 100MB of disk space?
As a general question, what files under C:\...\Local Settings\Temp\ should I
keep?
[I have some directories named: _SkypeIEToolbar_Cache; Acrobat Distiller 6;
Adobe; CitrixLogs; ...; outlook logging; wz5144 (for WinZip 11.1 I think)
I also have the Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files directory...

Try run,type:%Temp% go to edit,select all,delete all,close out.Return to
run,
type:C:\WINDOWS\Temp Edit,select all,delete all,close.In windows Temp,not
all can be delete (some in use),click ok,exit,empty recycle-bin..All these
files
are obsolete,as they were/are installation files that are no longer used..The
risk,none,actually microsoft recommends this proccedure.

Like Andrew E said, you will not be able to delete the files that are
being used.

You should be able to delete all the others.

From the command prompt
del %temp% /q /f /s
in use file will not be deleted, the rest will be gone.

Depending on what you have running at startup there may be a few you can't
delete. The reason for the fresh boot is that many installs will place
files in Temp to be installed during the next boot. If they aren't gone
after a fresh boot they aren't needed anymore.

(Home or Ultimate/Business) environment? I need to ask before I get myself
in trouble! ;-)

The easiest way to clear all of these at once is to use ccleaner:
www.ccleaner.com

It's small and fast and free.

Pay attention to the options, as it may also remove cookies that you want to
keep.

One of the BEST features of this program is that you can CHOOSE which
cookies to keep... all the rest will be deleted during cleanup.

Actually Yes! I run a batch file on XP, Vista, and Win2K3 boxes all
the time. I'll just post my code and you can make a batch file.
Code will start below the equals signs and will end with equal signs.
The first one is for XP and Win2k3. The #2 will be for Vista.
