Tick and Cross Marks in Excel

Hi

I am trying to insert ticks and crosses into the cells in Excel 2000.
I understand the ASCII code for the tick is ALT+251.

When I use this code on a PC that is running windows 2000, it works.
However, a pc that is running windows XP, ALT+251 it gives me a
subscript 1 or a ¬

Any idea why and how I can get round this.

Any help most appreciated.

Use a letter a with a Marlett font.
