I have tried 3 different thumb drives all are different sizes, (512, 1 gig
and 4 gig) each from a different manuf. None of them work. When plugged
into any of the 4 USB 1 ports XP Pro starts "new hardware found" wizard. It
defaults to find automatically, click next. After a moment or five it comes
back unable to locate drive and device not installed. And that part is
correct, they are not in explore.

I checked the USB drivers and they are all there as compaired to 4 other
computers in the house. One suggection from memorex tech support was to
remove all of the USB hardware under Device Manager and then let XP fine and
reinstall the USB drivers. I did that and it did not help. I wrote each
manuf tech support and all said XP should recognize it and install the
drivers, they do not supply seperate drivers. XP did recognize the model and
manuf of the drive it did not locate drivers. All 4 of the drives are USB 1
and 2 compatable and work in all of the other computers all with XP Pro. The
one that is giving me a problem is not the oldest (3 years old).

Any ideas?

XP asks for USB drivers:

Gave it a try. The regedit part was correct already. I deleted the file and
looked for the last two files but they are not there. Not sure what to do
next.

No reason for this to work, but try anyway.. Click Start, Run, type

SFC /SCANNOW

... click OK. If any files are damaged or missing, they'll be replaced.
You may need to reboot afterwards so damaged files will be replaced.
