Three Hour Bootup ?

R

Hi,

I installed the new ".NET
Framework 2.0"; and ran defrag, and
set the computer to run checkdisk, on
bootup.

It finished checkdisk, about
11:2?; and booted up to the desktop
background, and there it stuck, till
02:45, when I hit the reset button.

It was lighting the CDrom/WinXP
light every so often, so I tried to
have patience with it, but enough, is
enough !

Seems to be running OK, but it
bothers me, that I had to use the reset
button, to get it to boot.

Any idea, what was going on here ?

Thanks,
Ken .

WOW, and I though I'd had problems.
You mention that the CD drive contains the XP CD?
If that's so, make sure there are NO CDs or floppy disks in the drive before
you reboot. If it still appears to be trying to do excessive access to your
"Empty" CD drive, you might have a problem with that drive.
Temporarily, shut down the computer and then go into the case and remove the
large DATA cable from the CD drive.
Reboot, and see how the system behaves.
If it boots normally, you can try reconnecting the CD drive data cable and,
if the hang-up come back, you may either need a new cable or a new CD drive.
Also, it is important to make sure that the CD drive is NOT physically
configured as a "MASTER" on the same cable as the hard drive.

Hi,

There are two tricks, that I've
learned by trial and error, about
WinXP.
(1.)
One is that Windows misbehaves in
unpredictable ways, when a hard drive
gets >2/3 full.
(1B.)
It is very easy, for some
directory somewhere, to get over 650
megabytes, and that is a no-no also.
(2.)
A recent trick I've learned, is to
keep the WinXP distribution disk, in
the CDrom drive, when I don't need the
CD drive, for something else.
Otherwise, windows just degrades,
and dies.
Usually, requiring a reformat,
re-install.
(sfc /scannow is not enough.)

I am very confident - that all of
the troubles that we are all having
with WinXP are internet/sabotage.
WinXP, is a good (not great),
operating system.
But, I am also equally confident;
that if Mighty-Microsoft _wanted_ to
make an operating system that did not
require a Microsoft "engineer" to keep
running, they could create help files,
and scripting tutorials, that would
allow real people to un-do the efforts
of angry "people", on the internet.

Anyway ...

I do think that you're probably
right, about PC board connectors being
suspect.
I haven't opened the box, for
months, and haven't re-set the boards,
for, maybe a couple of years.
Time to go through it thoroughly.

Thank-You,
Ken .

You're quite welccome. I'm also suddenly experiencing weird happenings that
I'm sure are internet borne. I'm spending most of my time recovering and
re-installing software.

Hi,

I wonder, if there's a way to keep
a running log of all connections on the
desktop, and at least I could try to
get an address/addresses, on the bad
guys.

Thanks,
Ken .

When I wrote this, I did not take
into account, that many folks nowadays,
are using a CDR/CDRW drive, as their
primary CD-Drive, and bad people can
write over your WinXP distribution disk
with your own drive, if you keep it in
a writer.

I run a cheap CDrom (read-only)
drive, as my CD drive, and burn
CDR/CDRW's, with a different drive.

Be warned - if your drive is a
writer - do NOT store you distribution
disk in it !!!!!

Sorry,
Ken .
