How do you get the line of dots to appear in a table of contents connecting the topic to the page number

I just typed in the headings and page numbers myself. I know that is a rookie move, but there are only 5 headings

Try Format > Tabs
Once you get there, try setting Tab Stop Position to 5.9 (vary based on your
right margin), set alignment to right, set Leader to choice #3, don't forget
to click the "Set" button and then click OK. Type what you want on the left
of the page, press the Tab key and then type the page number to go with the
left margin entry.

Hi Ripper

Yes, well, if you used the Table of Contents dialog you would have gotten
the dots (formally known as a "leader") for free. To do it manually:

- Select all the paragraphs of your typed table of contents.
- Open the Format > Tabs dialog.
- Type in the location of the right margin (distance from the left margin,
which is 6" in a default US Letter-based document).
- Click the option button for Right (to align the page numbers with the last
digit at the right margin).
- Click the option button for the dot leader.
- Click the Add button and then the Close button. (If you forget the Add
button, you won't get a tabstop...)
- If you haven't already typed a tab character between each topic and its
page number, do that now.

First, this site is new to me. So thank you. I've been
trying to get the dot leaders to show in the TOC also,
have you gotten any helpful responses to your question?
If you do please forward them to me if you would be so
kind as to do that.

First, making Word create a TOC for you is _easy._ You are trying to
reinvent the wheel here, and you already own one. (It is sitting on your
computer under the Insert menu.) See

Second, Dot leaders can be set in the Format => Tab dialog box. You can
position things on the right side by setting a right tab. See

Dear Steve,

Just joined this site so I could look up and ask questions. My first

question was about dot leaders. As an old Word Perfect user, I was used to
them but could never find them in Word. Then, bam, there you were with the
