Does anyone know how to use this MS Newsgroup user
interface effectively? Apparently you can either use a
browser or outlook explorer. I'm using ie. I find search
very ineffective. In fact, I don't think it even works
right and gives different results on repeats of the same
search and doesn't report the posting date correctly. I'd
just like to be able to easily determine if there are new
replies to my posts across all the newsgroups. Is my
accessment accurate or are there tricks I haven't caught
onto.

Can Outlook be used instead of outlook express? Should I
switch to it?

Don't use the web interface newsgroup website.

Microsoft Outlook does not have a newsreader. It uses the one in Outlook Express.

Outlook will use Outlook Express to view newsgroups. Here is a website that
has the simple instructions for setting up OE to access newsgroups.

Thanks, Carey

Does this mean that I can use Outlook and it will use the
newsreader in outlook express transparent to me? Or do I
actually have to go and open an outlook express account
and use it for these newsgroups even thought I use outlook
for everything else?

I see there is no News tab in my Outlook Tools->Accounts.
Is this a killer for Outlook?

Ronnie, when I do tools->accounts->add I have no News
option. Will I have one if I go to Outlook Express and
configure it?

No version of Outlook has ever included a newsreader. By default
Outlook will invoke Outlook Express as its newsreader, but you
can use any newsreader you prefer.

I personally use Outlook for E-mail and Outlook Express for news,
but there are many other products available, and each has its
partisans.

Yes, now I see that I can use Outlook for email and other stuff and outlook
express for News, like you do. I can already that it is much better than
ie.

Yes, these are the instructions for setting up Outlook Express to use the
newsgroups directly. Post back if you need more detailed info.

Ronnie, I am now reading this newsgroup by opening OE on the same computer
that I use outlook for email, etc. Question: can I use OE for this
newsgroup on more than one computer. Will it download the messages on both
or is it like email and once you've downloaded a message it is gone from the
server?

No, it's not like email servers. The NNTP servers hold the messages for
varying amounts of time. The MS newsgroup servers hold the messages for at
least 90 days. So you can download the same messages on multiple computers.

One thing you will want to do first is to look at the viewing options in OE.
While viewing a newsgroup where you have posted a message, click the
View/Current View/Show replies to my messages. This will hide all messages
except for those that were posted to you or by you.
