Full message I am recieving at startup:

this program requires a security key. if you have one, select ok to
enter it. after entering a valid key, you will not be prompted again.

I get 2 boxes with this message in it. That is all. I don't know what
program it is or what to do. I checked msconfig's boot sequence of
programs, but everything has been registered and just to be sure, I
reregistered. Everything is a fresh WinXP Home install with ALL updates
installed. I even tried using the program Startup Inspector to get more
details on what the situation could be. Nothing. I am stumpted. I can't
do much without knowing what the name of the program I am suppost to be
registering is called!

Can anyone help me determine what program this is or how to disable
these annoying messages from coming up again? Thanks!

I just found out something else that might help: when I max out my
windows in the taskbar (still having those 2 annoying windows up!),
they get that look where it stacks both of them in the same listing in
the taskbar. The name of the listing is "svchost". I am not familiar
with editing the registry, but I believe that it is coming from that.
If anyone can help me out, I would really appreciate it!!! Thanks in
advance!!!

what you need to do
is to figure out what
program is providing
the pop ups.

when they do pop up,
do not close them. Instead
while they are opened
also open task manager
and see what process is
active and likely the
source of the nuisance
boxes.

you might want to put
anykind of numbers into
the pop ups only to see if
you can cycle additional
information from them.

I have did that already. Nothing came up. Oh, and I don't close them.
Both boxes are up right now as I am typing this. Thankfully they are
not set to always be on top of whatever I am doing! I will check more
closely in the task manager tho, but as before, I couldn't find
anything.

svchost is a legitimate
process that is likely be
taxed upon by those
pop ups. you need
to look for something
else...

Do you have some type of firewall (software or hardware) in between
you and the Internet? This might be a Windows Messenger Service "pop-
up" that would be blocked with a firewall.

Also, if you have connected to the Internet without protecting this PC
(anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware), you many now be infected/
infested with viruses/spywares/malwares. You will need to clean up
your system.

I fixed it. I manually searched for svchost.exe and found the faulty
one. I then renamed it where it was located and that fixed the problem.
Everything is running fine even after rebooting many times. Thanks all
for your help. It helped me track down the problem!

ok,

the problem as i see it is that
you have a message box with
no i.d. and it is nagging you
to enter somekind of key.

there is a real problem with
this because it doesn't even
take you someone to obtain
a key or buy a key.

you don't have a startup
running, nor to you find
an entry in the start up
folder and there is no
process running in task
manager.

however, this seems to be
the illogical part of the issue
because if a window is running
then there is a process in memory
running it that you simply cannot
recognize or it is camuflouge and
therefore a malware or possibly
a orphaned registry key that
has no parent files. Must have
been a dirty uninstall of a previous
freeware you downloaded.

there are a lot of tools
that can help you.

1) autoruns from microsoft.com
2) process explorer from microsoft.com
3) onecare from microsoft.com

in addition to the first party
tools above you might want
to use third party tools like

4) eusing registry cleaner
5) spybot

of course you could go into
the registry and look for something
out of place. but basically this would
be futile since you can't even ascertain
the name of the pop up window.
