OK, firstly I have checked through a LOT of subjects to make sure that there isnt already a solution to my problem. Here it is

I CANNOT find a way to stop msmsgs.exe from running WHENEVER I start Outlook Express.

This is what I have already done to solve this

Checked that MSN Messenger is NOT checked in the Options to 'start when WIndows starts up' and 'allow to run in the background'

I have also downloaded and installed the 'stopmessenger_oe' registry entry from jonathon. I have also deleted the entries from the .Net passpord in 'Network' as mentioned in a previous post

However, when I check on Task Manager (after starting OE) msmsgs.exe is RUNNING :

NONE of this has stopped the devious Messenger from starting

HELP !!!

Greetings Steve,

If you've run my .reg file, I would argue that something else is starting it *before* you run
Outlook Express (so you may want to check that).

However, you also might try turning off the Contacts panel in Outlook Express. To do so,
click the View menu, then Layout, uncheck Contacts and then click OK.

Hi Steve,

Then I really doubt Outlook Express is what's doing this, reboot and then immediately check
to see if msmsgs.exe is loaded.

If it has, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added
a new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
