This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site

Hi there,

Hope you can help!

I just got a new laptop with Vista already installed. I have an Access
database on a shared network drive on the network. I can access this database
from every PC currently known to man except the new Vista one.

Having typed the error message I am receiving ("This file is located outside
your intranet or on an untrusted site. Microsoft Access will not open the
file due to potential security problems.") into google I have read every
answer that there is, tried the solutions, but still no success!

The two popular answers that appear are 1) change the IE security settings
to include an IP address range for within the Intranet Zone - Done but, no
success. 2) Right click on the .mdb file and select "Unblock" from the
options - nice idea, but this option does not seem to appear on my Vista
machine.

I am presuming this is a Vista issue, don't really know. I was starting to
quite enjoy using the new OS but am now, through exasperation, am quite
frustrated with it. If someone could point me in the direction of a solution
I would be most grateful.

Kind Regards,
Russell.

p.s. I use these forums all the time, they are invaluable!

You're running in a not-recommended configuration. You should split
your application in Front-End (everything except tables, and linked
tables) and Back-End (tables). Put the FE on each user's workstation,
and the BE on a network share. Tony Toews has a utility to ensure all
users are always running the same version.

More recent versions of Access (e.g. A2007) also require you to setup
a trusted location on the workstation where the FE would be located
(e.g. program files\yourcompany\yourapp - Note: Vista has different
recommended locations).

Tom,

Thank you for your reply. Although I understand what you have written, I
don't pretend to really understand what you mean. Is there anywhere that you
could point me to where I could read up on this?

Thanks!
Russ

Cancel that, I managed to find an article, read up, understand, and have the
split the database.

But frustratingly the Vista machine STILL won't let me into the BE database?
This is crazy!

Do you think there is anything within Access that I can change that I should
tweak?

Thanks!
Russell.
