This Device Cannot Start (Code 10)

I have been using a Maxtor external HD for about 18 months with no problem.
I recently added another USB 2 device to my system and wanted to change
where it was plugged in. When I activated the "safely remove device" the
remove program stopped responding. So I ended the task in task manager and
shut down my system. On restart it wouldn't recognize the drive.

In device manager I get the "this device cannot start (code 10)" error. I
have tried several times to uninstall and reinstall but to no effect. Device
manager recognizes the USB mass storage device on reinstall, but then
reports an error on installation and that the device may not work properly.
I get the same exclamation mark in device manager after that. Haven't been
able to find anything in the MSKB except a reference to Windows 2000 and
asking for a fix.

I'm using Win XP Pro.

Please help. I have a lot of valuable backup and downloaded software stored
on this device.

Not quite sure how that article applies, Rick. I had read it previously.

Anyway, I have just now disconnected all USB devices.
Then in Device Manager I uninstalled all USB root hubs, and shut down.
On restart, windows detected and installed them again.
I then one by one reconnected my USB devices, leaving the mass storage
device for last.
All devices installed properly. Alas, the mass storage device again reported
problems (undefined) and might not work properly.
Sure enough, in device manager, same error as reported in this thread.
BTW, the drive also does not even show up in disk management.
I'm still without solution.

Hi,

Are you using a powered hub? The drive may not work as it cannot draw
sufficient power. What if you connect it directly to the pc, bypassing any
distribution nodes?

Not using a powered hub...connected directly to PC.
The device was working properly for 18 months. It was connected to a SiS PCI
USB Enhanced Host Controller, not bus powered, gang-switched, with global
over-current protection. (according to a report from SiSoft Sandra, which
recognizes that the device is present).
I discovered I only had one USB 2 port, where the device was connected. I
recently bought a high speed printer, and had done some swapping back and
forth in that port. It was during one of the swaps that the "safely remove
hardware" feature stopped responding...
Since then the device cannot start. I also no longer have the safely remove
hardware icon in system tray.

I'm having the same problem. I have a USB Hard drive from Western Digital. I works on my Dell Dimension, but when I plug it into my Dell Precision I get the Unknown Device and This Device cannot Start (Code 10) errors. Please let me know if you solved it
