Window XP - Home Edition

Problem: The CD-ROM drive is functioning properly and
software can be installed and files can be read/open files
from it, but any application that requires a CD to be in
the drive to function (eg. games, etc) fail with "This
application cannot run".

All patches have been applied. Virsus scans are clean.

Any ideas?

TIA

Are you running the app from an account with admin rights?

I'm just grasping at straws now, but is your CDROM drive D:\ (that is,
do you have multiple partitions or hard drives such that something else
is drive d:\)? If so, perhaps the apps are looking in the wrong place
for the CD -- there may be either a default to D:\ or a hard-coded D:\
in your apps.

If this isn't the case, you probably ought to try looking for help from
the maker(s) of the apps that aren't working.

Nope, just c:(hard) and d:(cd-rom) drives.
thing is that it is any app that needs to access the d:
drive has this problem and two months ago it used to work
fine. All of a sudden it stop working.

I smell a reformat/re-install coming.

thx

Rob - before you reformat, try a different drive. The drive might have
died. This happens.

having very similar problems, took system back to supplied state, cd's that were problem now worked, loaded couple of games and they give application cannot run errors. Games work fine. Seems to be isolated to internet provider cds.
