third party software unable to create VPN entry

problem started about two weeks ago after PC hung and I power it off
manually. First issue I notice was that I was not able to surf the web so I
immediately tried reboot using Last known good configuration and that solve
that problem but soon I notice my VPN to work was no longer working. I tried
reinstalling the software (repackage ROVA) that my company gave us for the
VPN access and still no luck. Then I created a Virutal PC on my PC and the
software worked in the VPC so I started comparing it to the host PC and
notice that somehow the type of connection somehow went from VPN to Broadband
and also the device is missing from those entries. I then did more searching
on the internet and found articles about reinstalling the WAN Miniport (PPTP)
and still no luck. I would have use the VPC going forward but because it
doesn not recongnize USB port so I cannnot use the VOIP software that my
company provided together with the VPN back to office function. I think last
resort would be to install Vista on top of existing XP hoping to resolve the
issue. Please help I don't think I am ready to go Vista yet.
