Third Party Concerns

Guest

I am interested in using some third party software, such as components,
add-ins, and database analysis tools. Does anyone have some solid suggestions
for how I can be assured and how I can assure my clients that we are not
exposed to spyware or viruses through the use of pre-compiled objects?

Thanks,

Marvin B.

None assurances here other than using an outgoing firewall tool.
Which is irritating to even highly experienced folks like me let alone
end users.

Also we tend to avoid the use of components and add-in Access due to
the distribution and version problems.

Unless you can see the code, you have nothing other than reputation
to go on.

Thank you for your reply. I wonder, though, what you think about the Total
Access tools by FMS, Inc (fmsinc.com). They have some apps that look very
helpful and they indicate that they are a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. I
would think that they would value their reputation enough. In addition, I use
Trend-Micro (which also has a firewall) and Windows Defender for checking for
spyware. Although I’ve been programming for over ten years, I’m a bit
overwhelmed with the security issues these days. I would at least like to
find a tool I could trust that helps me analyze and document databases,
generate contextual help, and keep track of code fragments in Office.
Any suggestions you about these concerns are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. That’s a very good point, and I’ve noticed that
some vendors sell the source code for some of their products. I am looking
for (a) tool(s) that help(s) me analyze and document databases, generate
contextual help, and keep track of code fragments in Office. I’ve seen these
types for programs with the Total Access programs sold by FMS, Inc. at
fmsinc.com. I don’t think they include the source code for installations and
add-ins. They are a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner; I might think that they
would be trustworthy, but it’s not completely up to me, of course, I have to
think about my clients. And I have to know that they can fully trust their
security and privacy with my work. Do you have any ideas for trustworthy
apps that might include the source code? I appreciate your suggestions.

Oh, I wouldn't have a problem at all with the FMS tools. I've also
met Luke Chung the owner of FMS. They're pretty decent tools.

FMS is a perfectly reputable firm. I've used several of their
products and find them quite valuable. And Luke Chung does a lot of
service to the Access community. I would never hesitate to purchase
and install one of their products.
