Themes format does not publish

R

Randy Grove

I maintain a site at fp1.centurytel.net/CAAS. I use
Frontpage 2002 running under Windows XP. For many months,
I had no problems. Now, when I publish the site, no
formatting is published. I am using a modified theme, but
that theme has published successfully in the past, and
will continue to publish successfully from a different
computer than the one I normally use, so I know that it is
not a server-end problem, it is something specific to the
one computer I normally publish from. It is not specific
to the theme, either, as no themes (including default, non-
modified themes) will publish properly from this specific
computer. Incidentally, the themes display correctly on
the publishing computer.

Since I only have limited access to the
computer that will publish properly, I need to get this
figured out so that I can use my own system to publish
from. I have reviewed the publishing logs and been unable
to find any indication of what the problem is.

Any help in figuring out the problem would be very much
appreciated.

(Note: the site as currently published displays
correctly, as I most recently published from the computer
that works. However, if I were to publish from the "bad"
system, none of the graphics would be visible, all the
text would be in Times New Roman with no formatting.)

On this "new" computer did you first publish a copy of the live site down to
this computer before make your changes and then publishing? If not them the
two locations are not in sync, also the "new" computer would not have a copy
of the modified theme until you have publish a copy from the live site.

The computer is not "new", just the problem. The site was originally
published from this computer (my home PC), and theme formats displayed
correctly for many publishes. Then, inexplicably, the theme format
disappeared after a publish, and I have never been able to publish
successfully from this particular computer since. I have attempted to
publish back to this PC from the live site, after fixing the theme
formatting from another computer, but the next time I publish from the
"problem" computer, the theme formatting has disappeared again. The theme
formatting displays correctly on the PC's copy of the site that I make
changes to and publish from, but the theme format never gets published to
the live site.

I have apparently somehow inadvertantly gotten this thread posted twice on
this newsgroup. Is there someway to merge the two threads?

See my reply to your other post re: ftp vs http in the sister thread that
appears above this one. (I publish via http.)

I appreciate your assistance in helping me resolve this. I am not a
professional web designer and am maintaining this site as a courtesy to a
non-profit interscholastic organization that does not have the resources to
procure the services of a professional. I don't mind doing so, as it is a
learning experience for me and I am otherwise involved in the organization
anyway. However, right now I can only successfully publish from my PC at my
real job, which is not fair to my employer and gives me a major guilt trip.
I really need to re-establish the ability to publish from my home PC again.

Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

A few things...

1. When publish always make sure you are publishing to the same location,
i.e., if you publish to http://www.mysite.com, then always use that URL, do
not switch to publishing to http://mysite.com, etc.

2. If you publish the site from one machine to the server, but need to work
on it locally from another machine, you must open the site on the server in
FP and then publish back to the current machine, make changes and then
re-publish.

3. Have done a complete publish, i.e., unchecked Changed Page Only?

Thomas,

In response to your points:

1) I always publish to the same location, regardless of which machine I
publish from. I don't change the default publish location, so I'm sure this
is not the problem. In fact, I doubt I could publish to the wrong location
inadvertantly, as my web provider requires a password before I can publish,
and the password will only work for my URL. And I access the site for
browsing directly from a saved "favorite" on my PC.

2) In order to "fix" my site if I make a publish from my home PC, I log on
to the live site from my work PC, load the site into FP, make whatever
changes I need, then save the pages directly back to the live site. This
fixes the theme formatting problem. For some reason that I have not
completely explored, I am unable to publish from the live site to my work PC
(I suspect this might have something to do with the firewall on my
employer's network, but I'm not sure. Since I'm not supposed to by using
this network for non-business related use, and since the method I'm using
accomplishes what I need, I haven't tried to verify this suspicion.) If I
make changes this way, I always back up the site on my home PC by publishing
from the live site to a backup web on the home PC. But the next time I try
to publish from this site on my home PC to the live site, theme formatting
disappears again.

3) Yes, I almost always do a complete publish. It makes absolutely no
difference whether I do or not, however.

One additional piece of information I've just remembered, not sure it
applies but it might: Because of an unrelated (I think) problem with
Microsoft Outlook not being able to find my mail server, I eventually had to
reformat my hard drive on my home PC, reinstall XP and all application
software. I'm not sure, but perhaps my problems with FP started after this.
Would this make any sense, or give you a clue as to why my home PC will no
longer publish themes to my site?

Again, thanks for your help.

However normally your login would be valid for either http://www.mysite.com
or http://mysite.com or http://ipaddress but it does make a different with
FP.

Personally I never use the Edit With FP Command in IE, I always login
directly into a web site with FP when I need to work on it.

Yes, because any time FP is (re-)installed, you prior published sites are no
longer in sync until you do a full publish back from the remote server to
your local machine. Thereafter you can use change pages only when
publishing.

When you re-installed, did you do a complete install and make sure everthing
you had originally installed was re-install and all options, etc.?

PS
Also do some clean up of your local meta files by
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files

1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files

Is this different than doing the following in FP?:

On the Tools menu, click Web Settings, click the Advanced tab, and then
under Temporary Files, click Delete Files.

If so, how do I search for FP Temp files (i.e., what is the file
extension(s), where am I likely to find them, and do I run any risk of
mistaking a vital file for an FP Temp file if I don't know what I'm doing)?

Anyway, I did the FP method of deleting the temp files, and I also deleted
all the local hidden *.web files as you suggested in 2) below, and that has
apparently fixed my problem! I successfully published from my home PC for
the first time in many, many attempts. Thank you so very much!

I am still curious as to why this problem occurred, if you have any
thoughts.

Most appreciatevely,
Randy Grove

Yes
That just deletes the web cache file (*.web) for the currently open web (but not the *.web file for your published web location)
- corrupt *.web cache files are caused by any publishing failure or abnormal termination of FP

The FP Temp Files are in the "FP Temp" Folder (usually in your windows default temp folder location)
