Today, I spent a couple hours chasing down an old
problem. The symptom was I could not send to the DV
camera a decent 3 minute movie. I tried various things,
and then I switched the cable between the camera and the
computer. The movie recorded successfully. I duplicated
the results successfully. I know I had at least six bad
send to the DV camera that were not successful with the
other cable. And I should note the other cable was
capturing data with no hint of noise problems.

The bad cable was a $29.99 Belkin 6' Firepath CBL,
listed on the receipt and package as F3n401-06

The good cable was a $39.99 Monster Cable, also 6',
listed on receipt and package as J2CAMAVDV6

I have had no problems with FireWire cables that cost < $10. I can't
imagine spending $40 on a FireWire cable. I got my latest ones from:

.

I got my first firewire cable off Ebay for easily under
$5. There is a difference here, a big difference in one
way, but understandably a very thin difference as
regarding generalizations. Also, worth noting, sad but
true, I am perpetually lazy and have not yet identified
my source of noise, which therefore remains unknown.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. The cables I got from deepsurplus are
thick with high quality connectors. I have never had a problem with a cable
and I have purchased many for our customers. If you think paying $40 for a
cable is a wise thing, I am reminded of this famous quote that apparently is
not P.T. Barnum's:

Sorry, I'm not your fact checker today and have no idea
what shipping and handling was. My point wasn't how
little or how much was the shipping and handling. I
simply spelled out my universe of cables between the
camera and the computer via a firewire.

As to your conjecture regarding my thinking, it's yours
not mine. I buy what I can. Unless there is other
reason I shop price. If I have a problem with piece of
hardare, then I look for other possibilities and
implement as needed. In this case I had a problem. To
understand and fix the problem I bought 3 cables home
from Best Buy and today took 2 back. The surplus store I
go to is 60 miles away, and I don't think there is a
surplus store much closer.
