As long as you NEVER have any type of problems and NEVER need to
reinstall Windows on that or any other computer the DVD is of little
use.
However it is probable you will need it sooner or later so keep it in
a safe place.
So on a major crash, it will be used for reinstallation. But what other
problems will it sort out? I sense you are saying it cannot be used for
repairs, ie selective reinstallation. I ask all this because of the suspicion
that if the disc is inserted and continue is pressed I am going to lose
whatever I have not backed up: not that the options for backup work cleanly!

Yes, it can be used for repairs.
If the media is OEM, the capabilities may be severely limited
depending on how the manufacturer set it up.
If the media is retail or a generic OEM, you will have more options
similar as Windows XP.
