I did everything that I was supposed to do.

I burned the .iso image to a cd and rebooted my computer to start the xp x64
setup.
about 81% of the way in the first set up files to be copied, I get an error
saying that wsysmod.dll was not on the disk or will not write the the drive
or something like that.

I burned 3 cds. All with the same .ios image. I had a lot of problems trying
to install the trial operating system. I had to jump from disk to disk with 2
other files as well (w_isdel.exe & wsyssetup.dll) to try and get every file
installed on the computer, but there was no troubleshooting the wsysmod.dll.
It just did not want to write to the drive. In the end I just gave up and
kept my 32bit system. I was really hoping to check out the 64bit OS.

Any suggestions on how it may be possible to still try out the 64bit OS?

The *downloaded* file is corrupt, yielding corrupt images from the .ISO.
Re-download the file, and then verify it with MD5 Checksum.
You can burn as many images as you want, but until the source file is
verified, you'll continue to have the same problem.
