I have been running "The Bible Library Suite" application
for a couple of years. After the last auto. download of
patches for XP, I now get the message:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Am I going to be able to use this application anymore?
And what about others? Can I expect the same?

A bit irritated.

Although you are irritated, there is nothing surprising
that a program written for one operating system will not
run on a completely different one. You can try a) running
your program in Compatibility Mode (see XP's Help &
Support for instructions); b) checking with the program
mftr. to see if there is a patch, workaround, or updated
version of their software that will work with XP; c) find
a program designed to run under XP that will do what you
need; d) dual-boot or have a separate computer running
the older operating system for this program.

I guess you missed the part about "I have been
running ... application for a couple of years." It has
run fine under Windows XP all of this time. Why would it
all of sudden stop working?

It is designed to run under Windows 95/98/ME/2000 and it
has been running under Windows XP just fine. The auto.
patches must have changed something.

Open C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT with Notepad and make
sure the file is valid. i.e. no garbage characters.
If the problem persists extract a new copy from the
Windows XP disc.
"expand d:\i386\autoexec.n_ c:\windows\system32
\autoexec.nt"

Look in the file with Notepad, and see if there are any lines after the
initial @echo off other than ones starting REM and

lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
REM Install network redirector (load before dosx.exe)
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx

(plus maybe SET or Path)
If you put a REM in front of the @echo off, you might see specifically
which is giving the trouble. Then, one at a time, try the effect of
adding REM at the front of such lines, to make them comments.

I can see no reason why any patch would invalidate an item that had been
there and working; but there might well be a coincidence of something
getting added that did not belong, at much the time you ran the updates

I had no AUTOEXEC.NT. So, I created one and copied the
commands that you described that are suppose to be there
(without REMming out anything). The software works just
fine now.

Thanks,

Frank
