System File not suitable for running MS DOS etc

I noticed in a previous post that someone else is having the same proiblem I
am having. There were no replies, but I would appreciate any advice on what
may be causing this problem. I have tried to install software from one
supplier and got the following error message however installing most
software has been no problem. I have noticed that the Installshield file
Setup.exe was dated some time in 1998 even though the software is purported
to be suitable for Windows XP.

Any ideas appreciated.

Sorry everyone, found the fix myself. For those with a similar message:

Go this site and download the XP_Fix.EXE file.

There are several possible causes for this. The problem may repeat itself.

Can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and creating
registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.

was the SP2 update responsible for removing the autoexec.nt and config.nt
files from \windows\system32 ??

mine are gone too, and I have never had a virus or spyware. why would sp2
do that?? I know they WERE on my system before the sp2 update.

Sorry, I misspoke! I failed to check for hidden files, my autoexec.nt and
config.nt _ARE_ still in \windows\system32. Must be the grog...

Never Mind!
