I've got a humdinger of a virus problem (can't even do a system recovery!) Is
this the right place for help?

I think so. I would add a lot of info about your PC.
What OS and Updates. Why can't you do a recovery? Error messages,
have you done any virus scan and with what, scan for malware and with
what etc.

Course my response is, I usually keep such good image backups, that a 30
minute restore is faster than a fix some days. So I lost a few emails.
Hell, its working again right!!!?

Good luck.

had the same problem, and if you can put whatever you can on a thumbdrive
that you want to save if you can still access anything. I ended up buying a
new desktop, because my harddrive even after formatting couldn't load windows

A virus cannot physically harm your hard drive. Unless something else
has happened to it (like it's failed) it should be useable again.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do
all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using
Multi_AV in Vista.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://tinyurl.com/yoeru3 - download link and more instructions

When all else fails, get guided help. Choose one of the specialty forums
listed at the first link. Register and read its posting FAQ. PLEASE DO NOT
POST LOGS IN THE MS NEWSGROUPS.

If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be
aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if
they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be
clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you take
the machine into a shop.

Burn BitDefender, or another program listed at the link below, to a CD
(using a working machine) and test the infected machine with it.
BitDefender also has a Rootkit checker on the Linux Desktop; run it if
you think that's the problem:

http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/

Download the executable rather than the .iso image.. it prompts you to
insert a CD and burns the file, no problem.

Then run these:

Malwarebytes© Corporation
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

SuperAntispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

HPxw8000, XPPro. I've downloaded countless anti-virus/malware/adware tools
and programs. When I hit exe. in the downloads menu I get application could
not be found. I had a recovery console in the bios from Combofix. When I
choose that on startup I get blue screen. When I do system restore I'm
prompted to find a program to open it up with, which I don't know what that
would be. Normally I wouldn't bother you people with this and just do a
reinstall. It's required to load SCSI drivers (downloaded from HP) when the
reinstall is started. window message "txtsetup.oem could not be found." I've
been on the HP forums but they've been remarkable unresponsive. It was
suggested if I could unblock the driver but I don't know how to do that and
haven't received an instruction reply yet.
Usually I get my support from buddies at work but I got laid off in May and
I don't want to be a total e-mail burden to them. They were my network of
support so I wouldn't mind taking it to a pro but I have no idea where to
start with that. Frankly I trust advice in forums like this better than some
guy at Big Geek Squad Dept. store type thing. So that's the update on the
stuff I've covered so far!

The Linux Live CD, that BitDefender operates on, doesn't use the hd,
except to scan it for malware. But if you've already tried reinstalls,
etc., it may be too late for a simple infection removal.

If you can't do a system recovery, you don't have a virus problem. You have
a hardware problem. Read the instructions that came with the computer to find
how to start the system recovery, usually from a hidden partition. If it
doesn't work, then you are likely having trouble with the hard drive, the
RAM, or the mainboard.

Backup your personal data, then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

cf. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

Here is your owner's manual

See page 48 for instructions to reinstall the operating system.

And, ironically, in other newsgroups I've seen "SPAMCOP User" post URLs to
websites of other MVPS.
