The overlay folder in FP 2000

What is the purpose of the "Overlay Folder" in FP 2000. I have noticed that
many of the files are now obsolete. Can these be deleted. Thanks
 
It is created/used when you apply a theme. If you are no longer using a theme in your site, then you
can delete it along with the derived folder
