The Outlook Status Bar should display the number of unread items.

As in past versions, Outlook 2003 should display the number of unread items
in the status bar. I have a blind coworker that does not use the folder list
at all. He uses all shortcut keys to move from folder to folder so he cannot
see the number of unread items in each folder because he doesn't use that
folder list.

Most comments I've read from the Outlook "professionals" suggest that this
option is simply not available. I'd like to know why it's been removed. I
myself prefer to use the mouse as little as possible (I'm an old mainframe
user - man could I get stuff done so much faster without having to remove my
hands from the keyboard) and if I could get away with seeing all the
information I need without having too many windows open within an application
(eg. folder list) I will do that.

Microsoft, will you consider putting this back into the application in the
next patch. Please also remember our "non-mouse friendly" friends, such as
the blind folk, who still operate mainly text and shortcut-key based lives
with their computers.
